Business Quest

Welcome to everyday adventures in my business life, including thoughts and feelings about a world within which all things are connected. This QUEST is a JOURNEY to share knowledge, a JUNKET to share enjoyment, and often times simply an OUTING among old friends and new acquaintances.

To Myers-Briggs I'm an INTJ on the cusp of an E. A war-orphan, I was raised an only child by my mother. Born into a family of engineers and inventors, I naturally gravitated to engineering; model railroading at age 5. By the time I left high school the railroad was well automated (back when mechanical relays and vacuum tubes prevailed.) Home was Gary, Indiana and while attending Purdue University I majored in Electrical Engineering, worked part-time and summers as a motor inspector at the Inland Steel 80" Hot Strip, where I found the air conditioning requirement of early automation equipment to be personally beneficial. I joined the DuPont Corporation as a Design Engineer and moved to Waynesboro, VA. (where in 1969 I automated the 1929 Acetate Chemical process using a Digital Equipment PDP 8E computer supervising five PDP14 industrial controllers -- the computer was programmed using a Teletype machine and paper tape!) I also had the pleasure of an assignment in Londonderry NI in 1973 followed by a move to Charleston, SC in 1976 to construct a fully automated polyester fiber facility (complete with industrial robots). But enough about me...

Project Discussion "Feedforward"

I've taken on the challenge to reveal the inner-most secrets of myself and our company to you during the Project Discussion scheduled for September 27th. I'd like to have some fun with that... I'd like you to imagine that the class has just completed on that fateful Tuesday, and as you leave the room you excitedly say to the person next to you, "Wow, that was GREAT!" Just imagine if you were so moved to have said those words, WHAT WOULD HAVE HAPPENED DURING THE PAST 50 MINUTES IN THAT CLASSROOM? Please share your thoughts and feelings and vision of what had taken place...

For our class to walk out of your presentation saying WOW THAT WAS AWESOME is very difficult task, considering every individual within our class would need something different to totally enjoy your lecture. The main thing everyone in our class is looking for is an A. So any information you’re able to provide us with about our project and how to make it the best, will truly draw many students to thinking your speech is amazing. Maybe you should also throw a little college humor in it while you’re at it.
Looking forward to meeting you and enjoying your presentation!

To have a great presentation in class, would be to create enthusiasm and motivation. I think you should probably provide us with a perspective of a business owner; for example, provide us with some guidance and knowledge on how to run a successful business. Tell us about previous marketing plans that you have found useful from past students. What specific plans did you use, what was the success rate, did it generate a lot of customers? Also, tell us what was the most successful marketing plan. Since we are doing a marketing plan for you, please discuss exactly what you want, what are your guidlines? What resources can we use to keep in mind what type of budget you would want us to create your marketing plan in.

I think that in order to keep the attention and interest of a class of about 40 twenty-somethings it is necessary to directly relate to us. I have had many speakers throughout my three years here and a select few still stick out in my mind as great presenters. I think it’s important to get the class involved and not just go through the motions with a power point presentation. I think it would be interesting to hear about your personal background, your goals, and how you have or are trying to achieve them. We have been in a classroom situation and learned the basics and how to go through the motions of being successful business people, but it would WOW me if you could give us real world examples and hand on experience.
